Hawa Nagila

The comedy track of Radha Mohan (Director of the film Mozhi) always had had its own style. The best one that I always enjoy from the movie Mozhi is the sequence where Prakash Raj slips the towel around his waist. Every little reaction of both the actors would just be so perfectly brought out in the song that keeps playing in the background. That song, played behind, has a lot of history that’s more interesting than Prakash Raj’s nudity.

Hava Nagila… as the song starts, is a Hebrew song taken from Ukrainian folk song which was composed in 1918 to celebrate the victory of World War I. Though a lot of versions are available, the one sung by Harry Belafonte stays to be dominant (the one that features in the movie). Just play it in your music system twice. From ‘En jodi manjakuruvi (Vikram)’or ‘Maiya Maiya (Guru)’ to ‘Saudi Basha (Va Quarter cutting)’, for Indian composers this song stays to be the dictionary when asked out for an Arabic styled song. You can’t call it copying. Technically, the industry of art has coined a better word. “Inspiration"
